Three sentenced to life for gang raping Keralite in Manipal

UDUPPI: The district sessions court awarded life sentence to three accused for abducting and gang raping a medical student of Kasturba Medical College. The victim is a native of Thiruvananthapuram. A fine of Rs 1.10 lakh each has been imposed on them.

The accused has been identified as Yogesh Poojary (30), a resident of Ontibettu village near Hiriyadka, Hariprasad Poojary (27), resident of Badagabettu in Parkala village, near Manipal, and Anand, 28, resident of Sanakkibettu, near Parkala.

Judge Shivashankar B Ammanavar also sentenced two other accused-Balachandra and Harendra to three years imprisonment and fined them Rs 5,000 each for destroying evidence.

Yogesh and Hariprasad are auto drivers and Anand did not have a permanent job.  Yogesh incidentally is a history-sheeter wanted in several cases of rioting. The vehicle used in the crime belonged to Hariprasad's brother.

The incident happened on June 20 in 2013. The girl was abducted and gang raped when she was returning back to the hostel from the university library. The accused who came in an auto, abducted the student and gang-raped her.

The accused were arrested in June 2013. The police filed the 650 page charge sheet in the court on August 22. The trial in the case began on January 6 in 2014. The court cross examined 108 witnesses.
