THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The City police is laying a trap to catch criminals among migrant labourers. The move comes in the wake of the recent robbery incident in the Kovalan branch of Muthoot bank and police’ failed mission to arrest the culprits from Jharkhand. City Police Commissioner H D Venkatesh told Kerala Kaumudi that the police would start collecting details of the labourers coming to Kerala from other states.
.According to the police, many labourers from other states with criminal background are indulging in robbery after coming here as labourers. Of late, there have been a spurt in the number of robbery cases, involving labourers from other states. Police will also seek the help of locals to identify places were migrant labourers live.
The police who had gone to Jharkhand in search of suspects in the Muthoot bank robbery case had to return empty-handed. Though they could trace the 12-member team involved in the case, they were stoned and hounded away by locals including women at the culprits’ hideouts. Even the Kerala police didn’t get necessary support from the local police.
Venkatesh has said that steps will be taken to get warrant form the court to arrest the accused as the police have their photos and addresses.
