Trusts and societies can start private university

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The higher education council Wednesday submitted a report to the government with recommendations like granting permission to start private universities for trusts, societies and companies in similar to other states.

The panel handed over the report to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the presence of Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb.  Some changes have been made in the report prepared by the expert panel with Prof C I Abdu Rehman as the convenor and MG University former vice chancellor Dr Cyriac Thomas as the chairman.

The chief minister said the matter would be discussed in the cabinet and in the UDF. It will also be discussed with teacher-student organizations and political parties. Talking to reporters here, he said a final decision will be taken only after making a consensus in all levels. Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb said that he is against staring private universities. However, the minister added that there is no importance for personal interests and the decision of the government is final.

The report says the state is far behind in higher education sector and the launch of private universities will be a solution for it. At least 30 acres of land is needed to begin private university in rural areas and 20 acres in cities. The concerned management has the right to fix the fees in universities. Each private university will have separate laws.
