Thiruvananthapuram, Tuesday, July 05, 2011: Security around the historic Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple has been stepped up further with deployment of commando unit, sources said.
The temple security has been handed over to the Quick Reaction Team after several precious articles valued upto Rs one lakh crore were found from the temple vaults during the inventory process.
Meanwhile the Devaswom Minister V. S. Sivakumar reached the temple on Tuesday to review security arrangements at temple after the recovery of treasure trove.
Speaking to the reporters here today, Minister added that he was satisfied with the security measures inside the temple as well as the temple premises. He added that the government will bear the expenses of the security blanket provided at the temple.
The Kerala police had recommended a three-tier security system to safe-guard the newly discovered riches of the Padmanabhaswamy temple. The proposals range from strengthening the cellar vaults using concrete, and installation of burglar alarms and perimeter protection devices that use laser beams.
The vaults used to store the riches according to the police should also be able to withstand explosions. Heavy security is already in place at the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple here where a seven-member Supreme Court-appointed team is engaged in opening and taking inventory of six chambers.
Armed guards and cameras have been placed around the temple and reports suggest that the treasure found is worth thousands of crores. Two of the chambers have not been opened for nearly 150 years.
Opening of the sealed secret chambers, on Supreme Court orders, which began on June 27, has so far revealed a large number of gold ornaments, gold and silver coins, stone studded crowns, idols and figurines inlaid with precious stones and jewels.
