Centre trying to sabotage Panchayat Raj: Sudheeran

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPCC president V M Sudheeran has alleged that the Union Government has been making concerted move to sabotage the Panchayat Raj system. When Rs 7000 crore was set apart in the budget for the Panchayat department last year, it was reduced to Rs 96 crore this year.

Sudheeran was speaking on Wednesday after inaugurating the Raj Bhavan march conducted by the KPCC against the Central government.

“Many projects envisaged by the Panchayat Raj department were dropped. The department has diminished into a small entity under the department of rural development. The Centre has been continuing policies to inconvenience the farmers. The prime minister’s statement that he would take effective steps to control fall in rubber price has become a farce. The import of rubber is badly affecting the rubber price in Kerala,” he said.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, KPCC vice-president M M Hassan, V D Satheeshan, former minister Adoor Prakash and Mahila Congress state president Bindhu Krishna took part in the protest function.
