Self-financing issue: Assembly drowns in din

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition on Monday disrupted the Assembly proceedings after permission was denied for adjournment motion regarding self-financing admission issue.

The Opposition squatted on the central floor of the Assembly house and started protesting. After this, the Speaker halted the proceedings for about half an hour.

Permission for adjournment motion was sought by V S Sivakumar. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala also alleged corruption in the contract between the government and self-financing college managements.

But Health Minister K K Sailaja said the government had gained a lot through the contract.

“Students under BPL category got 120 seats. Merit seats increased from 850 to 1150. The Opposition is the only lot not satisfied with the agreement,” the minister said. The Speaker denied permission for adjournment motion after this.

Kerala Congress (M) MLAs, who were sitting as a separate block in the Assembly, walked out under the leadership of party chairman K M Mani.

Later, Opposition returned to their seats after the Speaker informed that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would give statements regarding self-financing issue.
