Talks with speaker fail, opposition walks out

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The talks held between Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan and congress party leaders after the opposition UDF stalled the proceedings on the third day in the self-financing issue, failed. The opposition boycotted the proceedings blaming the government for supporting self-financing managements.

Talking to reporters outside the assembly, opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said the government is not able to control the self-financing managements. Instead of solving the issue, they are trying to make it worse. There is a joint business between the government and the managements. There was only a minor increase in the fees during the tenure of the UDF Government but now a steep hike is seen. The strike will continue till it is reduced.

The future programmes of the strike will be decided at the UDF meet to be convened in the afternoon. Where have the SFI and the DYFI organisations who staged protests over the issue, gone. We are keen in knowing the stand of the CPI on it, he said.

The assembly was suspended after the opposition trooped to the well of the house. The opposition reached the assembly tying a black badge and holding placards and banners.
