Didn't expect this from VS: Oommen Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former chief minister Oommen Chandy has said by opposing the death row for Soumya case convict Govindachamy, Communist leaders V S Achuthanandan and M A Baby have indirectly supported the Supreme Court Verdict in the case. “I didn’t expect this from VS. The CPM has been trying to divert people’s wrath against the verdict,” he said.

MA Baby had the other day triggered a controversy when he said the CPM’s stand was against death row and it was of the opinion that even Mahatma Gandhi’s murderer Godse should have spared the noose.

Soon after this, minister A K Balan came out stating that Govindachamy should be awarded the death penalty.  Balan said that he would not be satisfied with hanging him to death even for hundred times. This resulted in the general feeling that there was no clarity in party stand.

Meanwhile, VS, who had gone to attend CPM Central Committee meeting, also echoed Baby’s stand, stoking the controvery. But, he had added that it was natural for people to clamour for death sentence in heinous crime cases.
