Plus Two student who attempted suicide dies

KOTTAYAM: A Plus Two student who had poured kerosene all over her body and set herself on fire, succumbed to her burns today. She had taken the drastic step after the college principal allegedly rebuked and humiliated her in front of other students.

The student identified as Moovattupuzha Government Model Vocational Higher Secondary School Plus Two girl student and Moovattupuzha Maniyanthadam native P A Nandana (17) died at Kottayam Medical College early morning.

After preparing the inquest, the body was handed over to her parents.

Nandana was the daughter of Moovattupuzha Vazhakulam Maniyanthadam natives Anudharan and Rekha. 

Nandana’s father is a daily wage labourer. 

The incident happened on August 3 after 1:30 pm. 

Earlier in the day at school, the principal happened to find a note in Nandana’s bag, while she was checking students’ bags for mobile phones. After the exam, she called the student to the staff-room to ask about the note. The principal allegedly humiliated the girl in front of the teaching and non-teaching staff and asked her to bring her parents with her to school the next day.
  
The girl went back to her home and attempted suicide by setting her ablaze. The neighbours who heard the cry of the girl rushed to her house and shifted her to Moovattupuzha Taluk office and from there to Kottayam Medical College as he had sustained 80 percent burns.

Doctors informed the incident to Gandhi Nagar police station after being told it was a case of suicide attempt. Ettumanoor first Class judicial magistrate had also recorded the girl’s statement.  

Later, the parents gave complaints to the chief minister, education minister and district police chief, in which it was referred that the principal misunderstood the poem she had written and humiliated her publically.
