Youth attempts suicide, sets fire to taluk office

NEYYATINKARA: A youth tried to commit suicide inside the Neyyatinkara taluk office by dousing himself with petrol and trying to set himself ablaze. He said he did it, as his application to the chief minister requesting medical aid was not considered. The aid was announced during the tenure of the previous government.

It was Suresh (39) of S S Bhavan who tested ‘Vellarada Samkutty model’ in Neyyatinkara.

The police has taken him into custody. The suicide attempt was made on the corridor near the office of the tehsildar at 8.30 am this morning. Though Suresh, an auto driver tried to set himself on fire after pouring petrol all over his body, the match stick fell on the floor, igniting the petrol on the ground. A major tragedy was averted as the part time sweepers and two office employees extinguished the fire by pouring water.

No casualty has been reported. A team led by Neyyatinkara circle inspector Santhosh Kumar reached the spot and took him into custody. He had reached the office in his own auto.

Suresh who had undergone treatment at the Peroorkada Mental Health Centre had applied for the medical aid given from chief minister’s relief fund.  Even after months, he was not granted medical assistance. He used to come very often for the aid and when he came last on Saturday, the tehsildar told him that he would be informed, once it was ready.
