Kerala Hijada population expanding

KOTTAYAM: In Kerala, the population of hijadas (eunuchs) are on the rise, according to a survey. Though their population was behind 1000 a few years ago, now it has gone beyond 2500. There are about 200 hijadas in Kottayam and Alappuzha. The survey was conducted under the aegis of Aids Control Society.   

It is also pointed out that there are 25,100 sex workers in Kerala and they are mostly found in Kozhikode, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. 

In Kerala, there are also 16000 homosexuals. In Kottayam, there are 2850 sex workers and 800 homosexuals. Besides these, there are 2120 persons addicted to drugs. 

In India, the biggest population of hijadas are in Andhra and this followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu government has even set up Hijada Welfare board.
