Woman attempts suicide after 'killing' baby

VELLARADA: A woman from Vellarada attempted to commit suicide after allegedly killing her baby even as her husband would be arriving home tomorrow from abroad. 

It was Sreeja (30), the wife of Shakthi from Vellarada, Panachumoodu, Charalvila Puthan veedu who attempted suicide by slashing her wrist. She was found unconscious today morning while her son was seen lying dead in the bed room of their house.

Police informed that Sreeja strangled her son to death before slashing her wrist.  She killed her son after sedating him with cockroach spray. The incident came to light when Shakthi’s parents became doubtful about the bedroom door remaining close for hours in the morning and broke open the closed door.                                                                                                                                          
Though both the mother and son were rushed to Karakonam Medical College, the doctors there declared the child brought dead and Sreeja was admitted to Intensive Care Unit.

The intention behind the suicide attempt is not yet clear. The child’s body is kept in the medical college mortuary. Police officials including Kanyakumari District Supt has visited the incident spot.
