Vigilance gets legal nod for case against V A Arun Kumar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  The vigilance got the legal advice that a case can be registered against V A Arun Kumar, son of V S Achuthanandan, on the complaints of amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income and over his foreign tours. The legal advice has been handed over to the vigilance director, who in turn has to take the final decision.

A probe by the vigilance was ordered against Arun Kumar during the tenure of the previous UDF Government. However, a report could not be submitted before the completion of government’s tenure. During his stint as IHRD director, he had visited London, Macau and Singapore. The report of vigilance special cell SP Rajendran submitted in June did not match with the assets of Arun and the amount spent for his trip.

Another complaint is that irregularities worth Rs 41 lakh were noticed in connection with the construction of a godown while he was serving as the Coirfed managing director in 1999-2001. Arun handed over the charge of the construction to his relative R K Ramesh for 3.5% consultancy rate for the godown estimated to Rs 4.5 crore. He did not get the technical consent of the executive engineer of the public works department. Without any agency examining the construction, 90% of the bill amount was passed by him.
