449 cases of toturing minor girls


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 449 cases of minor girls being tortured were reported during the past nine months, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said in a written reply to the Assembly the other day.
He was replying to a query by K Saleekha as to how many cases were reported after the UDF Government came to power in the state.
Four deaths were also reported in connection with these cases and, in all, 595 persons were arrested.
Kollam district topped the list with 65 cases, of which Kollam City accounted for 44 cases.
 Thiruvananthapuram stood second with 53 cases, with Thiruvananthapuram rural accounting for 40 cases.
Among the districts, Wayanad registered the lowest number of cases - seven, and Railways filed two cases.
The following is the district-wise break-up of cases. Thiruvananthapuram -53 (city - 13, rural - 40); Kollam - 65 (city-44, rural-21); Pathanamthitta - 15; Alappuzha - 18; Kottayam - 29; Idukki - 25; Ernakulam - 46 (city-15, rural-31); Thrissur - 32 (city-8, rural-24); Palakkad - 39; Malappuram - 30; Kozhikode - 29 (city-13, rural-16); Wayanad - 7; Kannur - 31; Kasargod- 28.
 Deaths were reported in Thiruvananthapuram city (a suicide) and Thiruvananthapuram rural, Kollam rural and Kasargod, the Assembly was told.
