45 held for protesting against garbage dumping, hartal called

KANNUR: Police arrested nearly 45 persons, including 20 women, for protesting against garbage dumping at Punool-Pettipalam Trenching Ground in New Mahe Panchayat, near Thalassery. Following this, a dawn-to-dusk hartal was called by action council in New Mahe Panchayat. It later spread to Thalassery Municipality.


According to the police here, nearly ten loads of garbage from the Thalassery Municipality were dumped in the early hours (0430 hrs) with police protection after demolishing the tents of the action council which was agitating for the last 140 days. The tents were removed by using JCB at 0430 hrs, and on getting the information, action council members rushed to the spot to protest the police action. Police forcibly removed the agitators from the spot and arrested 29, including 12 women and two children.
