Badal set to become CM for a record fifth time

Thursday, March 8, 2012: With the people of the state reposing their faith in the SAD-BJP combine, Parkash Singh Badal is all set to become the Chief Minister of Punjab for the fifth time.
Sources said the incumbent chief minister is all set to occupy the top position again, and if he does, Badal will equal former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu’s record of holding the CM’s post for the maximum number of times. Basu had served as the Bengal Chief Minister for five times.
The Punjab chief minister has already sent his resignation letter to governor Shivraj Patil through a special messenger on Tuesday night. The governor has reportedly accepted the resignation and asked him to continue till the next government is sworn in.
The SAD legislative party is also scheduled to meet on Thursday to elect its leader and then later in the evening a combined party legislative meeting of SAD-BJP legislators will elect the leader of the house. The chief minister is expected to approach the Governor on Friday with the claim to form the government and the new government may be sworn in early next week.
Senior BJP leaders including BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and many chief ministers are expected to address the swearing-in ceremony.
While the SAD’s core committee will reportedly take the final call on who will be the next chief minister, the party, at a rally in Moga, had declared that Badal (Senior) will be the chief minister.
