Cong faces setbacks in Goa


Tuesday, March 6, 2012: Congress today faced major setbacks in Goa as a number of its stalwarts, including state chief Subhas Shirodkar and minister Joaquim Aleamo, lost to new faces fielded by BJP in the Assembly elections.
Congress candidate from Cuncolim constituency Joaquim Aleamo lost to BJP’s candidate Subhash Naik while Dayanand Narvekar lost to BJP’s Glen Ticlo in Aldona constituency.
In Calangute constituency, BJP’s Michael Lobo won against Congress’ Agnelo Fernandes.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Subhas Shirodkar also suffered a defeat at the hands of BJP’s Mahadev Naik in Shiroda constituency.
BJP has so far managed to get seven seats while it is leading in four.Congress has so far managed to get only two seats that to South Goa.
BJP alliance partner MGP has gained one seat while its leading in one.Goa Vikas Party bagged one seat.
Congress alliance partner NCP also suffered defeat with its candidate and sitting MLA Nilkhant Halarnkar losing to MGP’s Kiran Kandolakar from Tivim constituency.
Meanwhile, Former tourism minister and Goa Vikas Party candidate Franciso Pacheco has won in Nuvem, where he defeated Congress candidate Alexio Sequeira.
Pacheco had contested from Benaulim constituency in 2007 on NCP ticket.
In Fatorda constituency, independent candidate Vijay Sardesai won against BJP candidate. Naresh Sawal defeated Congress candidate in Bicholim constituency
