DYFI leader arrested during public function

KANNUR: In what could be described as a high-handed police action, an elected member of the Kannur district panchayat and DYFI leader P K Sabareeshkumar was arrested using force by a police party during a public  function here on Saturday.
Sabareeshkumar was arrested by the police in connection with the violent incidents that took place during the recent agitation organised by the DYFI against the budget proposal to raise the retirement age of government employees and teachers.
A member of the Kannur district panchayat, Sabareeshkumar, was arrested by the police a few moments after he proposed a vote of thanks at the annual celebrations of the Kannur Science Park where Rural Development Minister K C Joseph was the chief guest. Earlier on the day, the minister had come down heavily on the police for its inaction during the DYFI agitation, while addressing the district conference of Kerala Police Officers Association.
Attempts made by the CPM leaders to prevent the arrest was foiled by the police. The police had filed cases against DYFI leaders A N Shamzir, O K Bineesh, P P Didya  along with Sabareeshkmumar in connection with the march to the Collectorate.
