Mild tremors jolt Idukki again

Wednesday, March 14, 2012: Two mild tremors measuring 1.1, 0.5 on richter scale were felt on Wednesday evening in Idukki district, where the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam over which Kerala and Tamil Nadu are at loggerheads with conflicting claims about its safety is located.
The tremors were felt at Kulamavu, Cheruthoni, Peerumedu, Valakodu, Kattappana and Kumali areas. No casualty or property loss was reported due to the tremor felt. The tremors occurred at around 6 pm.
The area had recorded as many as 36 mild quakes since July last year with Kerala citing it as a threat to the dam and insisting on building a new reservoir to replace the existing one which it contends is weak.
