Pension age hike triggers widespread protests


Monday, March 19, 2012: The Left front, Youth Congress and Youth League came out heavily against the government move to raise the retirement age to 56.
Youth Congress State President PC Vishnunath has said that the Government should re-examine the move to raise the retirement age. Youth League President TM Sadhique Ali has said that the move to raise retirement age cannot be accepted.
AIYF and DYFI activists took out Assembly march as a protest against against the government move to raise the retirement age to 56.
Soon after the protest march, the agitators tried to barge into the Assembly premise who were blockaded by the police. This led to a scuffle between the police and the activists. The police used water canons to disperse the activists.
The march taken out by the activists of the DYFI to the collectorates in Kannur and Kasargod also turned violent.
In Kasargod, the NGO association workers staged a march when the DYFI activists tried to barge into the Collector’s chamber which led to a scuffle between the activists. Meanwhile in Kannur, the DYFI activists laid siege to the collectorate when the NGP association workers came shouting slogans hailing Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
