Police quiz Malayalee sailor of ‘Prabhu Daya’

Thursday, March 15, 2012: Prasobh Sugathan, second officer of the vessel `Prabhu Daya,’ suspected to be involved in the hit-and-run case at sea on March 1 off the Kerala coast, was taken into custody by police today.
Prasobh, who mysteriously fell off the ship after the mishap, was rescued by a Sri Lankan ship and was under treatment in Trincomalee. Prasobh, listed as first accused in the case, was taken into custody on his arrival at the Thiruvananthapuram airport today.
He was later taken to Ambalappuzha where he was interrogated, police said. While his father Sugathan alleged that Prasobh was pushed off the ship by his colleagues, the Tolani shipping company that owned the vessel had denied the charge.
Prasobh was in charge of the ship at the time of the mid-sea collision with the fishing boat resulting in the death of five fishermen. The captain of the ship Gordon Charles Pereira and another seaman attached to the vessel Mayur Virendrakumar had already been arrested and remanded by the Ambalappuzha First Class Judicial Magistrate court.
The ship is now anchored off the Chennai coast. Prasobh would be produced before the court tomorrow, police sources said.
