Nursing recruitment fraud: CBI seeks Interpol’s help

KOCHI: The CBI has sought the help of Interpol to trace Uthuppu Varghese,  a native of Puthupally, Kottayam and the main accused in the Rs 300 crore nursing recruitment scam. He is currently hiding somewhere in Kuwait. The agency has asked the Interpol to issue lookout notice against him.  

Uthuppu Varghese embezzled crore through his Al Sarafa Agency. The agency had made an agreement with Kuwait Health ministry to recruit 1200 nurses 

As per government regulations only Rs 19,500 can be collected as service fee from a person but the agency charged Rs 19.5 lakh from a person after fraudulently changing the figure ‘19,500.00’ to 1950000’ by removing the decimal point.

Though the CBI had sent an email to Uthuppu Varghese, asking him to be present at its office for questioning, he didn’t turn up. Following this the Inerpol’s help was sought.   

It was In a raid conducted by the Income Tax officials at the Agency office, the financial fraud was spotted. An unaccounted money of Rs 3 crore was also recovered from the office.
