Central forces sought at Kannur for local body polls

KANNUR: With a good number of polling booths in the district designated sensitive, the district collector of Kerala's Kannur on Sunday said he has sought the services of 10 battalions of central forces for the smooth conduct of the upcoming local body polls.

Over the years with or without elections, Kannur district has been identified as the most sensitive one in the state as there have been frequent skirmishes between the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh/Bharatiya Janata Party and Communist Party of India-Marxist activists and supporters.

District Collector P Balkiran told the media that he has requested the deployment of 10 battalions of central forces for the smooth conduct of the polls. Kannur district will go to the polls on November 2 and the election authorities have identified close to 1,650 polling booths as 'sensitive' and 'highly sensitive'. Over the years, central forces have become part and parcel, every time Kannur goes to the polls. Moreover, this time the request for central forces has also come from the Congress and BJP.
