Fireworks tragedy: Accused in five-day police custody

KOLLAM: The Crime branch police have been given the custody of the accused in the Paravur Puttingal temple tragedy. The order in this regard was given by Paravur Munsiff Magistrate M Satheeshan.

The 13 accused include temple office-bearers and fireworks contractors and they will be in police custody till April 20.
Earlier, there were heated arguments and counter-arguments between the Prosecution and the defence counsel, while plea for the police custody was being considered by the court. The defence counsel was in a spot when the court asked how only the temple officials escaped unhurt in the explosion. Though he tried to argue that some of them were hurt, the advocate was not able to point out any serious victims among them. When he tried to draw attention to the blame game between the police and the revenue department, the Prosecution opposed it strongly. He also argued that the fireworks was a usual affair conducted with the permission of authorities. There was no competitive fireworks. He also pleaded to the court to make the police also an accused in the case.

Strongly contenting the above arguments, the Prosecution said, “it was not the appropriate time to go into the merits of the case as it was being investigated by a special investigation agency”.
