Sunday, November 27, 2011: The water level at the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam touched 136 feet on Sunday as the water flow to the dam has increased following heavy rains in the region.
If the water level reaches 136 feet, the maximum level stipulated by the Central Water Commission, the excess water would overflow to the Idukki dam and hence the district collector issued an alert to the people living in the surrounding areas.
Control rooms have been opened at the Collectorate, Peerumedu and Udubanchola taluq offices. The collector said that all have been set in place to deal with any kind of emergency.
