VM Sudheeran calls for amendment of new liquor policy

November 09, 2011: Senior Congress Leader VM Sudheeran today suggested for an amendment in the state government’s new liquor policy announced by the state government.
Speaking to the reporters here on Wednesday, Sudheeran added that aCBI probe must be conducted into the government move to grant 3 star status for 21 hotels. There are several deficiencies in the new liquor policy which will be pointed out the government, he added.
Earlier report:-
According to the new liquor policy, the age limit for buying liquor has been raised from 18 to 21. By 2014, bar licences will be restricted only to five-star hotels. In panchayats bar outlets will be allowed to function from 8 am to 11 pm and in corporations, from 9 am to 12 midnight.
Under the new policy, the distance between bars has been fixed at 3 km in panchayats and 1 km in corporations and municipalities. The UDF Government has also slashed the quantity of liquor that can be kept in possession by an individual at a given time to 1.5 litres from the present three litres.
The new policy encourages de-addiction activities, and seeks to mollify various social organisations, including the Christian Church and other religious institutions, that have been clamouring for strong regulations or even a total ban on liquor.
