Police, protestors clash at Pampa-Chalakkayam tollgate
November 20, 2011: The march taken out by the BJP Yuva Morcha activists as a protest against the toll collection from vehicles carrying pilgrims to Sabarimala at the Chalakkayam toll booth, turned violent today.
The protestors tried to destroy the toll booth erected at Chalakkayam which led to a scuffle between the police and the activists. The activists pelted stones at the police and smashed the boards erected at the tollgate.
Traffic snarls owing to delay in issuing toll receipts to the vehicles waiting in long-winding queues before the TDB toll gate at Chalakkayam, four km away from Pampa, was a major problem facing the Sabarimala pilgrims on the Nilackal-Pampa stretch of the road during the annual Mandalam- Makaravilakku pilgrim season.
