NEET not mandatory for admissions to medical colleges

NEW DELHI:  The Supreme Court decided not to make mandatory NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) for admissions to medical and dental courses.

A bench led by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir said states can continue with the admission procedures followed earlier. The court passed the order while considering the pleas of some states questioning NEET.

The court said the private managements can declare results of entrance exams conducted by them and can admit students. Meantime, the states which have not conducted entrance exams can admit students from the NEET list. A final verdict on it will be announced in the first week of July.

The Supreme Court had earlier permitted the Medical Council of India (MCI) to conduct NEET. The court had directed the managements not to announce the results of the test conducted by them.
