HC orders release of ‘Prabhu Daya’ on surety of Rs 75 lakh

Tuesday, March 20, 2012: The Madras High Court has asked the Chennai Port not to release the ship MV Prabhu Daya, which collided with a fishing boat off Alappuzha coast killing five Indian fishermen.
A single bench verdict had ruled that the ship may be released only a surety of Rs 75 lakh.
Special investigation team (SIT) opposed the anticipatory bail application filed by Captain Gordon Charles Pereira before the Madras High Court.
State Director General of Prosecutions (DGP) Asif Ali represented the case in person at the Madras High Court when the application will be taken up for hearing. The court ordered that the ship should not be released without the approval of the SIT .
