Kochi to get a 'Koothambhalam' soon

TRIPUNITHURA: Giving a boost to the cultural activities, the city is to get a ‘Koothambhalam’ soon. The Rs 35-lakh worth project is being funded by the Excise Minister K Babu’s local development fund. The 40x40 square feet Koothambhalam model stage will have some green rooms and an open air auditorium with capacity of 450 seats. The stage will replace the existing old stage in the Laayam Ground near Tripunithura Statue Junction.
Tripunithura Municipal Chairman R Venugopal admitted a delay in implementing the project which was inaugurated by Excise Minister in January. He said works were postponed due to the Piravom by-election code of conduct. He also said that the project will be completed and will be opened for people within a year.
“Currently, we have a 20-year-old stage at Laayam Ground which will be replaced by the new ‘koothambhalam.’ We are aiming at inaugurating the project before the next Onam festival. All the Onam programmes will be conducted in the new auditorium, which will be a grand take off for the future events here,” he said.
He added, “Being a cultural city, events like Koodiyattam, Kathakali, Koothu and musical programmes are common here. All these programmes are held at various private auditoriums which are costly. The present project will provide a platform for all cultural programmes.”
