Though Selvaraj’s resignation brought immense advantages to the Congress, heading the ruling UDF, and gave it an upper hand politically over the CPI(M), the question whether he should be made the UDF candidate in the by-election due in the seat he vacated has caused serious divisions within the Congress.
There were allegations that Selvaraj’s resignation was the result of a political horse-trading indulged in by the Congress, particularly Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, and one of the offers made to the renegade for this was that he could be made the UDF or UDF-supported candidate in Neyyattinkara in the by-election and a Minister if he won the seat.
