Will Kodiyeri succeed Pinarayi?

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: When Pinarayi would step down as CPM State Secretary after his ten and a half year tenure of the office, on Friday at the CPM State committee conference, the next big question is who will succeed him.

Till now not even a hint is there about a replacement for Pinarayi and only speculation, expectations and anxiety are high among the party cadres as to who would be the next Secretary.

The conference will begin in Alappuzha tomorrow and end on February 23. Secretary election will happen only on the last day. When activists and leaders are eager to know about the new Secretary, the party leadership has been silent on the matter.

As of now, the top preference is for Politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, unless there is some unexpected reverse move in the party. The other probable are leaders like M A Baby, Dr Thomas Issac, A Vijayaraghavan, M V Govindan, E P Jayarajan and Vaikom Viswan.

Pinaray’s aspirations are also important in the election of new Secretary. He became the Secretary in 1998. Once he leaves his post in the party he will enter the parliamentary area.
