Tharoor disapproves of writers returning awards

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tharoor has disapproved of writers returning titles and awards including Kendra Sahithya Academy awards. He said on Thursday that such gestures were a disrespect shown to recognition.

“Writers have all the rights to protest injustice. It was painful to hear about some writers returning awards. Sahithya Akademy is an independent institution. Our anxieties are political and there is no need to mix them (anxiety and politics) together, “

He said writers should stand up for freedom. They should protest against today’s political set up and at the same they should not show disrespect to recognitions as recognitions are respect given by society.

Calling upon the writers to come forward to protest against the “rising intolerance in the country”, Tharoor added, “I don’t feel writers like M T Vasudevan Nair, Zachariah and Sugathakumari didn’t go back on their commitment to protect the freedom of expression by not returning the awards.”
