KOCHI: The Kerala High Court Wednesday cancelled government’s decision to set up municipalities bifurcating Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode Corporations.
Meantime, the court upheld the formation of Kannur Corporation. The government had decided to form Kazhakoottam, Cheruvannur-Nallalam, Elathur and Beypore municipalities. The court mentioned forming municipality after bifurcating corporations is illegal. This is violation of the orders issued by the high court itself, the division bench pointed out.
The government issued a notification to set up Kazhakoottam municipality after bifurcating 12 wards of corporation’s Kazhakoottam, Attipra, and Sreekaryam zones. However, the CPM approached the high court against it. If bifurcation is implemented, 12 wards of the City Corporation will go to Kazhakootam at one go.
Eight out of it is CPM’s wards. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is presently helmed by the LDF and if these 12 wards go to Kazhakootam, Thiruvananthapuram is likely to be taken over by the UDF. With the next local self-governing polls, the CPM may lose Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The government decided to set up Elathur, Cheruvannur-Nallalam, Beypore municipalities after bifurcating Kozhikode Corporation.
