MARANALLORE: Following the finding that land mafia was behind the death of retired ASI Surendran (61, Kurien), the village assistant, who is alleged to have a role in Surendran’s death, has gone into hiding.
The death of Surendran, a resident of Koovalasseri Moolakkonam, was a case of suicide and he is found to have committed suicide by drinking acid. In the suicide note he had blamed land mafia for his decision to commit suicide.
Surendran committed suicide last Friday. While preparing the inquest, the police happened to lay hands on the suicide note which was kept in Surendran’s pant’s pocket. In the note it was mentioned that the natives of Malayinkeezhu, Maranallore, Balaramapuram and Neyyattinkara had links to his death. The note also mentions the names of retired DySP and Village Assistants.
Surendran had mortgaged his 20-cent land for Rs One lakh but he didn’t get back the property documents even after paying back Rs 13.5 lakh towards loan amount, interest and compound interest. When he asked the documents for his daughter’s marriage, the mafia silenced him by threatening him with dire consequences. They also demanded huge amounts in lakhs for returning the documents.
