THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The polls to local self-governing bodies should not be postponed at all, said opposition leader V S Achuthanandan. The bid to extend the polls is violation of constitution, he said in a statement.
The tenure of panchayats and corporations have been clearly defined in constitution 243 E and U. According to that, the condition is that each panchayat will last for five years, the date fixed on the first meet. This is applicable for corporations also. If tried to postpone the polls against it, then it is violation of constitution, he said.
The government is trying to misuse the election commission like how they misused the office of the AG and advocate general for political gains.
