NEW DELHI: The Centre has rejected Kerala’s plea for new dam in Mullaperiyar, saying that it could not consider the plea as the Mullaperiyar case is sub judice before the Supreme Court.
The trail is going on in the case filed by the Tamil Nadu against the building of new dam.
Kerala had approached Environmental ministry with the concept of a new dam following the Supreme Court order that permitted the raising of water level to 142 feet. The Tamil Nadu then pointed out that Kerala’s demand for new dam would be contempt of court since the Supreme Court had not given the go-ahead for new dam. The Centre also pointed out the above while rejecting Kerala’s plea for new dam.
The Environment ministry has informed the State that it has ended all further proceedings on Kerala’s application for new dam.
The Centre has also written to the State pointing out the recommendation of the expert committee studying the Mullaperiyar case.
