Juice, ice-cream laced with alcohol sold to children ? Rishiraj Singh orders inspection

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: From the beginning of the next academic year, the Excise department in coordination with the Food Safety department is planning to conduct inspections in eateries and juice/ice-cream shops, after considering the possibilities of alcohol/narcotics-infused juices, ice-cream and other eatables that could be sold to school children, when schools reopen.

Inspections will be held in bakeries, stationaries, juice/ice-cream parlours and hotels near school/college premises. The Excise has got the secret information that intoxicating sweets, chewing gums and other such things are being sold on school premises. It is on the basis of this information the government is planning to replicate in the shops the raids that are usually conducted in bars and beer parlours.

Food safety experts have also been roped in for the operation so that they can prima facie identify intoxicating materials, if any, that are included in the food materials sold to children.

There have been attempts to mix narcotic materials in sweets, cakes and ice-creams and lure children to their shops after creating an addiction of sorts in them. The main aim is to thwart this attempt. It was Excise Commissioner Rishiraj Singh who has ordered the combined operation.

Besides this, selling of intoxicating materials will be banned within 100 metre radius of educational institutions including professional colleges. The officials have also been asked to seize narcotic materials, if any, are found in shops near and around educational institutions, way ahead of the next academic year.
