Tuesday, November 01, 2011: Opposition leader V.S.
Achuthanandan has today filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the State
government’s decision to remit the prison sentence of Kerala Congress (B)
leader R. Balakrishna Pillai.
The plea says that Pillai was not eligible for remission of
prison sentence on account of good conduct as he had been punished for the
unauthorized use of mobile phone while undergoing imprisonment.
Pillai was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by
the Supreme Court in a case of corruption in February this year, pertaining to
awarding of contract for a tunnel of the Edamalayar hydropower project in 1990s
when he was Power Minister in the then UDF government.
Pillai ran into further trouble last month after he
responded to a call from a local TV channel to his phone in violation of prison
rules, following which authorities had extended his jail term by four days as
penalty.
He was punished with an additional four days of imprisonment
for having talked to a television channel reporter over mobile phone during
imprisonment.
