CPM criticizes Balakrishna Pillai’s release

Tuesday, November 01, 2011: CPI-M today criticised the UDF government’s decision to give remission to Kerala Congress-B leader R Balakrishna Pillai, who was released from jail today along with 138 prisoners in connection with the State Formation Day.
In a statement here, the CPI-M state secretariat said the Court had initially awarded a five-year sentence to 78-year-old Pillai, but reduced it to one year of rigorous imprisonment in connection with the Idamalayar graft case on account of his age and the delay in the case. “Pillai’s release is against the spirit of the Supreme Court judgement”.
He spent only 69 days in jail and enjoyed 75 days of parole. He was later admitted to a private hospital where he was under treatment for the last two-and-a half months, “the statement said. Civil society would not accept the decision of the UDF government, it said.
