Flooding in State capital: Rs 10 cr for evacuation operation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government has decided to allot Rs 10 crore as Flood Mitigation fund  for evacuation operation being carried out in flood-prone areas in the City capital. The cabinet meeting held today decided to allot the fund for the work which is being done under the supervision of chief secretary.

It was also decided to carry out the operation in an effective manner and the operation was also given the name ‘Operation Anantha’. Ministers Manjalamkuzhi Ali, V S Sivakumar and PJ Joseph have been given the charge to evaluate the works going on.  

Chief Secreatry Jiji Thomson has also been entrusted with the job to coordinate the functions of various government departments in order to solve the flood issue. In yesterday’s cabinet meeting the chief secretary had made a presentation of actions taken by the government till then. Based on this report, it was decided to give a fillip to the operations.   

Further steps will be taken based on the Disaster Management Act, 2005.According to the act, the officers carrying out the evacuation of encroached land will get extensive power. The cabinet meeting also decided to invoke various provisions of the act.
