Hand chopping: 8-yr jail for 10, 2 yrs for 3

KOCHI: In a sensational case in which New Man college professor T J Jospeh’s palm was chopped off for alleged blasphemy, Kochi NIA court has awarded eight-year rigorous imprisonment for the first ten accused in the case . The other three convicts were sentenced to two years in jail. From their fine, Rs 8 lakhs should be paid to Joseph as compensation.  

Jamal (44), Shobin (28), Shamshuddin (37), Shanavaz (32), K M Pareeth (36), Yunus Aliar (34), Jafar (33), K K Ali (34), Shejeer (32), and K E Kasim (47) are the convicts who got eight year’s rigorous imprisonment.

Absul Latheed (44), T H Anwar Saddiq (35) and Riyz (33) got two-year imprisonment   

The incident related to the case happened in July 2010 when Joseph who was the lecturer in New Man college was waylaid and attacked, allegedly for setting a question for Internal exam that amounted to blasphemy.

Besides invoking UAPA, the convicts were also charged for murder attempt, conspiracy, spreading religious hatred, misusing explosive materials, protecting the main accused and destroying evidence.

The NIA had filed charge sheet against 31 out of the 37 accused. For want of proper evidence, the court acquitted 18 persons. Five convicts including the main convict are still absconding.
