Jishnu extols nurses on nurses day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Today (May 12) is international nurses day and actor Jishu, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, has come out with a Facebook post, praising ‘the ladies with the lamp’. The post comes with an old photo of him posing with nurses.

Jishu through his post specially remembers Malayali nurses working in various hospitals across the world. Of the 20 lakh nurses registered with Indian Nursing Council, 18 lakh are working in Kerala. 75 per cent of families in India will have at least one nurse in each family.

There is also reference to Government Nursing College Professor Ambika’s statement that Malayali nurses work without any laziness, irrespective of how much they are paid.

“In several private nursing institutes, nurses are not given appointment order and they are made to work without pay under the pretext of training. Not only this, in case they want to go on maternity leave, they will be asked to put in their papers. Often nurses take huge amounts as loans for making payments at recruitment agencies, in order to go abroad. But their prospects are shrouded in uncertainty and may have to undergo harassments from hospital managements there,” he writes

Jishnu concludes by recalling an incident in which a nurse solaced him, understanding his mental state, when he lost his temper. “Even now I regret for losing my cool that day,” he adds.
