‘Murali Kannampally’s arrest unlawful’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Now it is alleged that Maoists leader Murali Kannampally’s arrest was not legal. It is criticised that Murali had no criminal cases against his name and hence, his arrest is against the Supreme Court’s direction.

As there is no case against him, police can’t seek his custody. Justice J B Koshy said that Murali couldn’t be made an accused just because he is a member of a banned organisation. Meanwhile, Murali loyalists say efforts are being made by the police to make him an accused in old cases.

Murali, a native of Ernakulam Irumpanam, was arrested from Pune on Saturday. Along with him, ‘Maoist’ Ismail was also arrested. The alleged mastermind of Maoists activities in Kerala, Moideen is a native of Pandikkadu and Ismail’s brother.

Murali was made an accused in Kozhikode Kayannayil Police Station attack case of 1970. He had been absconding for the past 40 years. Under the pen name Ajith, he has brought out several books on Maosism.

After dropping out from Kozhikode Regional Engineering College, he fled from Kozhikode. Being a student, he joined Naxalism and later formed an organisation called Naxalbari. When it split, he sided with Naxal K Venu. Later when Naxal groups merged, Murali became the head of Naxalbari.
