J C Daniel award for I V Sasi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran director I V Sasi has been chosen for J C Daniel award, 2014, taking into consideration his overall contribution to Malayalam cinema. It carries a purse of Rs One lakh and a citation.

I V Sasi was born to I V Chandran and IV Kausalya in West Hill Irumbanathu house in Kozhikode on March 28, 1948. He later took diploma in fine Arts from Madras School. Sasi reached the film world in 1969 as the art director of A B Rajeev’s ‘Kaliyalla Kalyanam’. He later worked as cinematographer, assistant director etc.     

In 1975, he debuted as director by directing Utsavam. Till then the impression was that a cinema without Prem Nazir in the lead will never take off. It was then he made Utsavam, roping in artistes such as K P Ummer, Ranichandra and Srividya. It became a great hit, ushering in a new face for Malayalam cinema. His next, Avalude Ravukal, was a historical success in the tinsel world. It was Malayalam’s first film with Sensor board’s A certificate. This was also later shot in Hindi.

In 2013 Sasi got Life Time Achievement Award. Senior Malayalam actress Seema is his wife and Anu, Ani are their daughters.
