School of Mathematics cries for attention

KUNDAMANGALAM: The School of Mathematics at Kundamangalam is the only State institution totally dedicated to the study of Mathematics. Here there are no graduate and post-graduate courses. The aim is advance learning in Mathematics.
But the institute seems to be in stunted growth with the authorities failing to exploit the available resources to the hilt. Here there are only five research students including two part-time researchers.
There are also Phd programmes and Satellite conferences to select brilliant Mathematics students and lead them to research. International conferences and workshops on Mathematics are also held here.
There are academic facilities, an extensive library, Online data base of European Mathematical society and Cambridge university.
In the faculty there are one associate professor and two assistant professors but there is no full-time director.
Those concerned with the institution says if Faculty is expanded, more students will join the institution. Hostel and other facilities will also have to be improved.
The institution lies in front of Kozhikode CWC RDM on 10-acre land.
Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and Department of atomic energy jointly founded it in memory of Kerala prominent Mathematician and astrologer Sangama Grama Mahavan (1340-1425).
The then chief minister A K Antony laid the foundation stone in 2004. This was inaugurated by V S Achuthanandan in 2008 while he was the chief minister.
The faculty was started in 2009. The institution cries for the attention of authorities as it has the potential to become Kerala’s pride. There is also a plan to start an MSc course.
