Central excise to quiz actor Dilip

KOCHI: The central excise department issued a notice directing actor Dilip to appear before the office on Monday at 11 am and give his explanation on the service tax evaded. An amount of Rs 13 lakhs and some dollars were seized in the raid conducted at the actor’s residence in Aluva and at the film company ‘Grand Productions’ in Ernakulam yesterday.

The department has asked the actor to divulge the source of the amount seized. The team said the modus operandi adopted to evade service tax was to receive direct payment by cash/cheque for only a small portion of remuneration for acting in movies and to get the balance through distribution rights of those movies.

A similar raid was conducted at the office of director Lal Jose and cameraman P Sukumaran.

Meanwhile, reports say notices have been issued to many noted actors in connection with the evasion of service tax. The notice has asked them to give an explanation for causing arrears before December 31.
