Drunken SI manhandles P J Kurien’s escort team

CHANGANASSERY: Boozing on Christmas day seems to have landed an SI from Mullapally and his friends in trouble. They entered into a brawl with the policemen who were part of the escort team of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Prof P J Kurien on Wednesday. The SI, working in Pathanamthitta, is reported to have seriously attacked the members of the escort team.

The incident happened at Nedungapally in the noon. The police team had come to give escort to Kuiren at Kottayam-Pathanamthitta border from Nedungapally to Karukachal station. The team, on a tip-off, raided the shop in Negungapally where the SI and his friends were on a drinking spree. Despite tough physical resistance put up by the drunkards, the team was able to huddle them into the police jeep. A case was registered against them for the disruption of official duty and for attacking the escort team.

However, the SI and others got bail in the evening. The SI, an accused in several cases of police high-handedness, is known to have high influence in the home ministry. He most often escaped the clutches of law due to this reason. On Wednesday also, he returned to the place within a few hours of arrest and threatened the local people, according to reports.
