Govt failed to inform centre facts on Aranmula Airport

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  It has been alleged that the government had failed to inform the centre some facts in connection with the Aranmula Airport. A complaint has been cropped up that the government failed to inform Union Forests and Environment ministry about the filling up of the paddy fields and wetland by the KGS Group, promoters of the airport.

The ministry had sought an explanation from the government over the filling up of the paddy fields and wetlands in February 2012. The director of the environment department conducted an examination on the place and in his report had written that the KGS Group had filled the wetlands. Filling fields without permission is violation of law. The report had mentioned to inform centre about some construction work done without the permission of the forests and environment ministry.

After examining the file, the chief minister forwarded it to the industries minister. The portion where it was mentioned ‘fields filled up’ had been written ‘exemption’.  But it is not clear whose hand writing it is. The chief minister signed the file and handed it over to the centre. The ministry gave permission for the KGS following the report that the fields were not filled.

Meantime, Minister P K Kunhalikutty said the file on the filling of paddy fields is not looked by the industries department. The department is in charge of the re-notification of the sector.
