Unruly scenes witnessed at inaugural function of Beverages HQ

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Some unruly scenes were witnessed at the inaugural function of the headquarters building of the Beverages Corporation. The CPM, who took to the streets their protest seeking the resignation of Excise Minister K Babu in the bar bribery case, blocked the way of Excise Minister K Babu. The minister sitting in his car for some time, somehow came through another way and inaugurated the building.

Ministers K Babu and V S Sivakumar arrived at the function in their official cars Monday morning at 10.30 am. CPM activists led by V Sivankutty MLA showed black flags at the minister and said they will not allow the minister involved in the case to inaugurate the building. They also squatted in front of the ministers’ official car and shouted slogans. Though top police officials reached the spot and tried to calm them, it did not find any result. In the melee, stones were pelted and police resorted to lathicharge.

The minister did not pay heed to the activists demand asking him to go back. He left only after inaugurating it. I had travelled all over the state after the allegation and why this protest all of a sudden, asked Babu. The police later used force and removed the protestors from the site.
